Hazel

Racing name: Hazel's Comet · 4 years · Adopted 2023

"She walked in the door and immediately found the softest spot on the couch. She's never moved far from it."

We weren't looking for a dog. We were just browsing the rescue website — the way you do when you're not ready to commit but you're curious. Then we saw Hazel's photo. She had this expression that was equal parts dignified and exhausted, like she'd seen things. We drove four hours to meet her. She fell asleep in the back seat on the way home and hasn't stopped napping since. She is the most peaceful creature we've ever shared a home with.

Rocket

"He ran for four years. Now he runs exactly once a day — to the kitchen when he hears the food bag."

I live alone and I travel for work. I was worried a dog would be too much. My rescue coordinator told me greyhounds are basically cats in dog suits — independent, low-maintenance, happy to sleep while you're gone. She was right. Rocket is the easiest roommate I've ever had. He greets me at the door every evening like I've been gone for a year. That alone was worth it.

Duchess

We adopted Duchess six months ago and she has completely changed the energy of our home. She's patient with our kids in a way that still surprises us. She lets our seven-year-old read to her. She follows our five-year-old around like a shadow. She came to us nervous and quiet. Now she zooms around the backyard every morning and then collapses dramatically on the rug like she's earned it. "I adopted her thinking I was rescuing her. Turns out she rescued me right back."

I went through a hard year — a breakup, a job change, moving to a new city where I didn't know anyone. A friend suggested I foster a greyhound while I got settled. I said yes mostly to have something to come home to. Vesper arrived skinny and wide-eyed and completely unsure of stairs. Within a week she had claimed my bed, my heart, and my entire social life — everyone wants to meet her. I never did give her back.

"Our kids call him their brother. He takes the title very seriously."

We have three kids under ten and a chaotic house. Everyone told us a greyhound wouldn't fit. They were wrong. Biscuit is the calmest presence in our home — which, given the competition, is saying something. He tolerates dress-up, accepts being used as a pillow, and has never once snapped or growled. He just looks at us with those big eyes like he can't believe his luck. We feel the same way about him.

"I'm 71. Scout is 7. We're both retired and we're both exactly where we're supposed to be."

My wife passed two years before I adopted Scout. The house was too quiet. My daughter found the rescue and drove me to meet him. He walked up to me, put his head against my leg, and that was that. We walk every morning at the same time, the same route. He knows the way better than I do now. He's slowed me down in the best possible way. I don't know what I'd do without him.
